Third dose at all? Brusaferro: “Likely scenario”From the report, however, it turns out that in the 12-19 age group over 27% of children did not receive even a dose of vaccine and 5.5% only received the first dose.
On the other hand, 90,002 (5.8%) of school staff have never received serum yet (67.2% of 12-19 year-olds, 3,064,055, have completed the vaccination cycle as of 25 October 2021).On hospitalizations: late third dose. So why are the hubs closing? There is no school effect, but don’t let your guard down
The document also notes that “the hard core of unvaccinated school staff is close to 6%”. Further criticality: “There is no periodic screening of infections in school structures except in sentinel schools, for which, however, public data is lacking”.
Furthermore, there is a problem of investing resources: too many to disinfect surfaces and few to ventilate environments, where the interpersonal distance of one meter becomes “a flexible obligation in chicken coop classes”. So the call for greater attention to students: “there is still no school effect” but “the reported outbreaks invite us to keep our guard up”.
At school still masks
The Gimbe highlights some critical issues, and the president Nino Cartabellotta warns: “With the winter season at the door and the evident resurgence of new cases in the last week, it is essential to keep a close eye on the schools where the reported outbreaks show that the balance is unstable.
In addition to aiming for maximum vaccination coverage for both school staff and students over the age of 12, and the general population, it is necessary to strengthen systematic periodic screening and implement system interventions that guarantee adequate aeration and ventilation of school premises: in particularly in the under 12 age group where vaccines are not available and in the under 6 age group where even masks are not usable and the distancing is substantially inapplicable “.
The chaired Foundation has released a new report with a summary of the scientific evidence on the effectiveness of interventions to improve COVID-19 safety in schools. Many critical issues were noted, especially in the lack of attention to the ventilation of the rooms and the use of masks. For Gimbe, however, the achievement of a higher level of vaccinations remains primary. THE REPORT.
27 OCT – “The scientific evidence on the one hand shows that there is no zero risk of contagion in schools, on the other it suggests that it is possible to minimize it through a multifactorial approach by integrating different individual and environmental prevention interventions”, this is the summary of the situation according to Nino Cartabellotta, President of the GIMBE Foundation which today released its new report on the school and Covid.
Gimbe recalls that according to the data of the weekly report of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, in the period 4-17 October 2021, 8,857 cases were diagnosed in the age group 0-19 years, of which 99 hospitalized, 3 hospitalized in intensive care and no deaths, with a progressive reduction – in the last 4 weeks considered by the ISS report – in the incidence of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.
“These data – says Renata Gili, GIMBE Head of Research on Health Services – show that so far the feared” school effect “has not occurred, both thanks to the vaccination of students and school staff, and to the progressive vaccination coverage of the general population: the consequent reduction in viral circulation is reflected in the school environment, even in pupils under 12 for whom there are still no authorized vaccines. One more reason to reach as many unvaccinated people as possible and speed up the administration of third doses ”.
